CricketEngland will face New Zealand in three Tests followed by a four-Test series against South Africa in 2008.

The Tests against the Kiwis will take place at Lord’s, Old Trafford and Trent Bridge, followed by a Twenty20 game and five one-day international matches.

Lord’s, Headingley, Edgbaston and The Oval will host the Proteas Tests, with Edgbaston starting on a Wednesday, before a similar one-day programme.

Bristol and Cardiff will host ODIs but there is no game for the Rose Bowl.

CricketJohn Carr, director of England Cricket, said: “One of the scheduling parameters we had to deal with was that the 2008 season has to end in early September to enable both England and South Africa the opportunity to travel to the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

“The 2008 season will include a Wednesday start as well as four Thursday starts and two Friday starts for npower Test matches. In a busy summer we feel that this sequence gives the players the maximum opportunity for rest and recuperation.”

CricketThe third Test against South Africa at Edgbaston will start on Wednesday, 30 July.

England have a good home record in Tests against South Africa (only nine defeats in 57 games) and New Zealand (four losses in 47 matches).

Test match dates
First Test match, Seddon Park, Hamilton 5th – 9th March

Second Test match, Basin Reserve, Wellington 13th – 17th March

Third Test match, McLean Park, Napier 22nd – 26th March

Breaking his silence over his omission from India’s One-Day International team, Sourav Ganguly said it was “disappointing” because his one-day record is next best after Sachin Tendulkar

A reticent former India captain was unwilling to be drawn into any discussion on being ignored, but even then his hurt showed.

“I am disappointed just like any other cricketer in not being a part of the one-day side, as I had a great year last year and my one-day record is probably the next best after Sachin. It is disappointing, but then I have accepted it,” he said on Monday.

Ganguly refused to answer questions about reports that he and Rahul Dravid were left out of the ODI team on the insistence of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni

The ten Test match playing countries and Kenya qualified for this World Cup automatically, and 5 further teams qualified via the 2005 ICC Trophy, thus gaining ODI status. The field of sixteen teams is the largest ever for the Cricket World Cup. Mello, the friendly cat is the mascot of the tournament.

Participating Teams
Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, West Indies, England , Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Bermuda, Netherlands.

Matches

Day matches will be held from 9:30 to 17:15

West Indies time. The first innings will run from 9:30 – 13:00 and the 2nd innings will run from 13:45 to 17:15.

The matches will be One Day Internationals. They will be operating through normal ODI rules. All matches are 50 overs a side unless stated otherwise by the umpires or match referee. A bowler can only bowl a maximum of 10 overs per match. In the occurrence of bad weather, each side must have batted and bowled a minimum of 20 overs each otherwise the match will be declared a no-result. If each side has batting and bowled over twenty overs, the Duckworth-Lewis Method will apply in order to gain a result or modify a target.

Laws of Cricket

The Laws are intended to apply to all two innings matches; the International Cricket Council has implemented “Standard Playing Conditions for Test Matches” and “Standard Playing Conditions for One Day Internationals” to augment the Laws of Cricket. Similarly, each cricketing country has implemented Playing Conditions to govern domestic cricket. Note that the Laws do not provide for One Day or Limited Overs cricket; these modifications have been made by the Playing Conditions for One Day Internationals. Teams may agree to alter some of the rules for particular games. Other rules supplement the main laws and change them to deal with different circumstances. In particular, there are a number of modifications to the playing structure and fielding position rules that apply to one innings games that are restricted to a set number of fair deliveries.
